Thornes Reserves - 4 Wakefield Athletic "B" - 3
Wakefields' third string suffered a narrow defeat at the hands Thornes Reserves in this Supplemantry Cup seven goals thriller leaving both teams needing one win to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Athletic started brightest with the pace of Sam Murphy and Ben Baines a constant threat and they were rewarded after 20 mins when the pair combined to leave Murphy free to smash an unstoppable shot into the top corner. The visitors doubled their lead when midfielder Aleks Celebiacanin ghosted in unmarked to finish of a flowing move from close range. Thornes retaliated and were soon on level terms with a double-blast from Kyle Redhead.
Wakefield regained control and their dominance paid off with teenage Josh Brear pouncing to his his first goal in open-age football and give Wakefield a deserved 3-2 lead. A plethora of missed chances was to prove costly as they failed to seal the game by half-time. The home side saw Redhead complete his hat-trick early on the turn before Pickens gave then a 4-3 lead. Wakefield tried to salvage a point that would see them through to the quarter finals but came up short with time running out as Thornes held nervously firm to secure maximum points.
