Report

Wakefield Athletic crashed out of the Landlords trophy after being comprehensibly beaten by premier division side Netherton.

Wakefield had beaten premier division opposition in the previous round but this proved a step too far. Having said that, the opening 30 minutes proved to be a close encounter. Although there were few clear cut chances, Wakefield were finding gaps in the Netherton defence as they looked to unsettle their opponents.  The highlight of this period came from a controversial decision by the referee. The Netherton keeper came racing out of his goal and appeared to go over the ball and catch Wakefield striker David Jones fairly high. The referee felt the keeper had played the ball as Jones was probably lucky not to have a serious injury.

Netherton picked up their game and took the lead as a fine strike from Mark Morgan gave them their lead. Wakefield’s heads dropped and soon found themselves 3-0 down as an Ash Nichols header and a tap-in from Paul Lamb put Netherton in control.

Wakefield responded well at the start of the second half and pulled a goal back when Philip Hayes was professionally checked in the area as he raced through on goal. Alistar Hill converted the penalty. It didn’t take long for Netherton to restore their 3 goal advantage as Mark Morgan capitalised again. Netherton then became ruthless and further goals were added by Paul Lamb, Ollie Johnson and Tom Dewkes to complete the rout.

Wakefield’s man of the match was Jonny Still, with Hill and Jones 2nd and 3rd respectively.
