Athletic kept their survival hopes alive with only their second league win of the campaign.
It was win or bust for the hosts and they went for the throat from the off, Marc Shaw going close early on.
With Graham Waite and Jason Sinclair bossing the midfield, widemen Matthew Kidd and Tom Maher were causing problems down the flanks and the duo combined for the opening goal, Maher dropping a delightful ball in behind the Tigers' defence and Kidd smashing home on the half volley.
It was the shot in the arm Athletic needed and they came out in the second half looking to kill the game off.
Bretton threatened rarely but found the home defence in mean mood and keeper Paul Grey in inspired form to snuff out any threat.
Maher made no mistake with the second after more tireless work in attack from Shaw and when Simon Armstrong glanced in the third from a corner the points were safe.
Andy Black added a fortuitous fourth after a spill from the keeper to round off a comfortable afternoon for the fired-up hosts.
Athletic boss Gary Kidd said: "We have played like that in patches all season but have struggled to do it for 90 minutes. "Hopefully this gives the lads the confidence to push on and save their campaign."
The West Yorkshire Sports & Social Club's man-of-the-match award for Wakefield Athletic "B" was shared by Alex Varley, Paul Grey and Simon Armstrong.
