Wakefield & District Sunday Football League (Division Two)

Wakefield Athletic "A" ............................................ 3 Two Brewers ........................................................ 1

Wakefield Athletics second string came from behind to overcome a much experienced Two Brewers outfit thanks to goals from Adam Deakin, Kevin Guy and Simon Newey in this Division Two game at Sandal.

The home side made a strong start and forced a corner in the opening minute which saw striker Rob Pick hit the crossbar with a flick from Simon Newey's corner.  Both Sam Murphy and Kevin Guy forced the visiting stand-in keeper Neil Brown into point-blank saves in the opening stages.

The visitors took command with Andy Shields a thorn for the Wakefield rearguard.  Two Brewers twice hit the home side’s woodwork before taking a deserved lead in the 43rd minute with some clever play ending with Ian Aneavsey ghosting in on the blind side to fire past keeper Jim Hardisty.

Wakefield upped the tempo on the turn and saw both Dave Markwell and Michael Moore force point-blank saves from keeper Brown.  The equaliser came in the 52nd minute when midfielder Michael Moore won possession in his own half before finding Simon Newey whose fiercely driven right-flank cross was nudged on target from close range by Adam Deakin.

The home side kept up the sustained pressure and went 2-1 up in the 63rd minute when debutant Kevin Guy impressively finished a breakaway lead by skipper Tom Pick, Matthew Killey and Sam Murphy.

Wakefield saw both Chris Riley and Dave Markwell go close with headed efforts before Simon Newey accepted a pass from Murphy and held off a defender and cooly slotted the ball home for a 3-1 victory.

Keeper Neil Brown and Dave Griffiths were impressive for Two Brewers while the West Yorkshire Sports & Social Club man-of-the-match award for Wakefield athletic "A" was shared by Matt Fenlon, Dave Markwell and Mike Moore.
