Wakefield & District Sunday Football League (Division Two)

Two Brewers ..................................... 2
Wakefield Athletic "A" .......................... 5

Wakefield Athletics' second string recorded their second double of the season with a well-worked victory over Two Brewers in this Division Two fixture.

Both sides produced an open attacking brand of football but with both keepers in top form, clinical finishing proved to be the difference and saw Wakefield retain top.

Wakefield posted early warning with the home keeper Neil Brown twice called upon to save with his feet to deny both Sam Murphy and recalled striker Simon Newey while at the other end home striker Andy Shields forced an agile save from visiting custodian Jim Hardisty.

It needed a set-piece to break dead-lock in the 28th minute following a sustained period of pressure which saw Gavin Heppinstall power a header home following a teasing right-flank corner from Alex Badjie.

Wakefield made it 2-0 when a flowing move involving Lamin Conteh, Gavin Heppinstall and Omar Sanyang created an opening which saw Sam Murphy burst clear beating the off-side trap before steering the ball past the keeper with aplomb.

On the turn, the home side turned the tide with two quick-fire goals inside two minutes to make it 2-2.  A free-kick from the right by Andy Selby saw Mick Suddaby direct his header home in the 47th minute and the equaliser followed with a back-heeled goal from Jamie Fell following good hold-up play andinsicive pass from Suddaby.

The visitors re-grouped and won a penalty on the hour.  Skipper Tom Pick slammed the ball home but it was re-taken and saw keeper Brown push the ball onto the post before being cleared to safety.  Wakefield forced a series of corners and went 3-2 up in the 67th minute when a Badjie corner from the left was nudged home by Simon Newey.

The goal of the match saw midfielder Alex Badjie win possession in the middle of the park, evade one lunging challenge before sending in a wonder strike into the top corner from 30 yards out.  The final goal game in the 84th minute was set-up my 16 year-old Oliver Bartholomew who beat one player, strode forward before delivering a disguised pass which was well read by Omar Sanyang who applied the finishing touch.

Alex Bramley, Vinney Burke and Neil Brown excelled for Two Brewers while the West Yorkshire Sports & Social Club man-of-the match award for Wakefield athletic "A" was shared By Alex Badjie, Jim Hardisty and Mike Moore.
