Wakefield & District Sunday Football League (Division Two)

Wrenthorpe Rangers--------------------------------------------- 1
Wakefield Athletic “A” ------------------------------------------ 3

Wakefield Athletic "A" returned to winning ways with a hard fought victory over Wrenthorpe Rangers in this Division Two fixture.

Kevin Guy and Adam Deakin posted early warnings before a flowing move involving brothers Tom & Rob Pick and Simon Newey ended with Sam Murphy dispatching a low drive on target to give the visitors the lead in the 25th minute.

Ten minutes later, Wakefield doubled their lead in a counter-attack led by Simon Newey and ending with a clinical finish by the industrious Mike Moore at the end of a surging run from 40 meters out.

Wrenthorpe hit a purple patch minutes before the break but wasted good opportunities to get into the game.

The home side started well on the turn and forced Wakefield to defend in numbers for a sustained period and when they made in-roads, they found the visiting custodian Tom Salter in outstanding form.

Wakefield made it 3-0 in the 67th minute with 16 year-old midfielder Oliver Bartholomew crowning a promising display with his first ever goal in open-age football with a neat finish from close range.

The host hit a late consolation but the visitory held on gallantly for a deserved victory on the day.

The West Yorkshire Sports & Social Club's man-of-the match award for Wakefield Athletic "A" was shared by Mike Bell, Sam Murphy and Matt Fenlon.
