Wakefield & District Sunday Football League (Division Two)

Crown .................................................... 1
Wakefield Athletic 'A' ................................. 6

Wakefield Athletics' second string registered their first double of the season with a well-earned victory over Crown FC in this return Division Two fixture.

Despite missing various players, Wakefield Athletic "A" produced an excellent and accomplished display to end their run of defeats against the Crown to go top of the table but having played more games than their closest rivals. The hero of the hour was striker Omar Jeng who hit a superb hat-trick in this thrilling encounter.

Wakefield opened the scoring inside the first few minutes as a ricochet inside the box broke for Omar Sanyang. The striker coolly lobbed the ball over the advancing goalkeeper Shane Tierney and saw the ball drop just under the bar to give his side the lead.

A break down the left side almost saw Wakefield double their lead as a cross by Gavin Heppinstall found Adam Deakin. His mis-hit shot fell to Omar Sanyang who diverted the ball against the post and away to safety.

Sanyang did double the lead as he chased a through-ball from Pa Badjie. The home custodian spilled it, allowing Sanyang to finish calmly into the corner from a tight angle.

The Crown attempted to rally, and Wakefield custodian Jim Hardisty made two excellent stops from Ash Mcgee and Nick Clarke saves. However, from an out-swinging corner, Crown captain Lee Hawkhead was able to head home to bring them back into the game.

Lamin Conteh almost re-established Wakefield's two goal lead as his 25 yard free-kick was well saved by the home goalkeeper. It looked as if the scoreline would remain 2-1 at halftime, but Wakefield scored just before the break. A long throw by Tom Pick was expertly flicked on by Pa Badjie, and Gavin Heppinstall was able to head home his first goal of the season.

Wakefield didn't take their foot off the gas in the second half and were able to push forward repeatedly with menace. Michael Moore volleyed just wide from the edge of the box and Dave Markwell headed a corner wide, before a great break by Sam Murphy and Tom Pick saw Omar Sanyang smash his shot against the bar. Tom Pick reacted to the rebound but could only head wide.

Wakefield finally did add their fourth goal when Tom Pick drilled in a great cross from the right hand side, and Michael Moore arrived at the far post to head in powerfully and effectively kill the game.

The Crown continued to fight valiantly and refused to give in, but the fifth goal eventually came and provided Omar Sanyang with his hat-trick. Substitute Simon Newey broke down the left hand side and his low cross was expertly finished by Sanyang.

Wakefield weren't finished there and were able to add a 6th. Michael Moore linked up with midfield partner Badjie and reached the edge of the box before curling a left footed shot inside the far post to end the scoring.

Ash McGee, skipper Lee Hawkhead and Kev Wilson played solidly for Crown while the West yorkshire Sports & Social Club man-of-the match for Wakefield Athletic "A" was shared by
Michael Moore, Omar Sanyang and Lamin Conteh.
