Wakefield & District Sunday Football League (Division Two)
Hemsworth Res. ...............2
Wakefield Athletic 'A' .......0
Wakefield Athletic produced a bright and spirited display and were ultimately unlucky to go down 2-0 to Hemsworth.
Both sides started brightly, as Adam Deakin was denied by the Hemsworth goalkeeper and Tom Pick shot wide for Athletic, while Athletic goalkeeper Jim Hardisty made two fine saves. Wakefield fell behind when the Hemsworth winger ghosted in at the far post to head home beyond a helpless Hardisty.
Wakefield again raised their game as a great move between Tom Pick, Chris Riley and Oliver Bartholomew created a good chance for Adam Deakin, whose shot was deflected over the bar. On the stroke of halftime, another quick Wakefield attack saw Simon Walton cross for Kevin Guy, whos terrific shot hit the post with the goalkeeper beaten.
HT: Hemsworth 1 Wakefield 0.
In the second half, Wakefield dominated but couldn't quite find the cutting edge. An Adam Deakin header from a Kevin Guy corner was cleared off the line, before a Guy corner evaded everyone before being cleared off the line again by the defender on the far post. A shot by substitute Omar Sanyang hit the side netting, before Tom Pick missed a good chance, heading a free header into the side netting from 8 yards.
Hemsworth had attacks of their own, hitting a post and also producing an unbelievable miss from a couple of yards, before killing the game off on the counter attack, with Hardisty tipping the first shot onto the post but the rebound slammed home from close range.
The West Yorkshire Sports & Social Club man-of-the match award for Wakefield athletic "A" was shared by Chris Riley, Tom Pick and Simon Walton.
