Wakefield & District Sunday Football League (Division Two)
Wakefield Athletic "A" ................................... 2
Horbury WMC .............................................. 3
Horbury WMC registered their first double of the season with a late victory over Wakefield Athletics' second string and keep their title hopes alive.
The visitors were gifted the opening goal after just five minutes of play with a defensive mix-up allowing Neil Williams an easy goal.
Wakefield recovered their composure and saw Sam Murphy force a two fisted save from the visiting custodian before Simon Newey went closer with a half-volley on the half-hour. The visitors were forced on the back-foot for long periods and once again their keeper came to their rescue with a flying save from an excellent strike from Pa Badjie.
Horbury looked dangerous on the counter-break and punished the home outfit two minutes from half-time with Steve Mallinson cashing in on an indecision to make it 2-0 with a low shot.
Wakefield upped the tempo on the turn and pulled a goal back in the 46th minute with a pile-driver from Sam Murphy. Newey went close with a goal-bound effort from close-range before Pa Badjie and Omar Sanyang forced point-blank saves from the busy visiting keeper.
The home side drew deservedly level in the 65th minute with a counter-break from defending a corner to a 70 yards surging run from Pa Badjie ending with a slick 1-2 with Omar Sanyang before a classic finish of the highest quality in amateur football.
The home side fell foul for the third time in the game and allowed Horbury to nick a soft goal through Dominic Anderson in the 79 minute. A late flurry saw the home side's skipper Tom Pick miss a point-blank header from one yard out before both Sanyang and Gavin Heppinstall missed golden opportunities to equalise as Horbury held on for a mighty victory.
Julian Granville, Dominic Anderson and Simon Wain excelled for Horbury WMC while the West Yorkshire Sports & Social Clubs man-of the match award was shared by Pa Badjie, David Markwell and Lamin Conteh.
