Wakefield & District Sunday Football League (Division Two)
Peacock .......................................................... 4
Wakefield Athletic "A" .............................. 5
Depleted Wakefield Athletics' second string needed a spot-kick winner from full-back Tom Pick two minutes from time to overcome a spirited Peacock outfit in this Division Two fixture at Wrenthorpe Park.
Wakefield made a positive start with Rob Pick and Simon Newey going close before a poorly judged off-side ploy backfired with Arran Dennis breaking clear to lob the advancing stand-in keeper Matt Killey for a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.
The visitors retaliated within a minute and were soon on level terms. Midfielder Adam Deakin was brought down of the left and the resultant free-kick saw Simon Newey ghost in to slam the ball home.
Ten minutes later, Sam Murphy accepted a pass from Alex Varley and held off his marker before delivering a low drive across the face of the goal and saw Newey place the ball on target for his brace and give his side a slender lead.
Wakefield soon made it 3-1 when some good work by play-maker Richard Brown found Sam Murphy who finished in clinical fashion with a shot into the bottom of the net.
The second period proved to be a ding-dong affair with Peacock much the dominant force. In the 47 minute, Rob Pick put Newey clear and his screaming effort beat the on-rushing home keeper but sailed narrowly wide.
Peacock staged a mini fight back and saw Melvin Halford cash in on a long-punt with a lob over the advancing keeper to pull a goal back and forced two goal line clearance's form Bruce McIntosh and Tom Pick.
In the 74th minute, a counter-break initiated by Richard Brown ended with San Murphy's surging run and a well-placed effort make it 4-2 to Wakefield but Peacock retaliated and scored two quick-fire goals through Carl Moore (2) to make the score 4-4 ten minutes from time.
Wakefield were forced to defend in numbers and lived dangerously. Isolated break-away chances fell to Adam Deakin and Rob Pick(2) with near misses before a solo run saw Simon Newey brought down in the box and gave Tom Pick the opportunity to fire home the resultant spot-kick for a tense victory.
Chris Peaker and Craig Moore were outstanding for Peacock while the West Yorkshire Sports & Social Club's man-of-the match award for Wakefield Athletic "A" was shared by Matt Killey, Simon Newey and Simon Walton.
