Wakefield & District Sunday Football League (Division Two)
Walton S&S ---------------------------------------- 3
Wakefield Athletic "A" --------------------------- 1
On song Walton were forced all the way by a resilient Wakefield Athletics' second string before late goals saw them secure maximum points in this Division Two fixture.
The home side made a dominant start with a lion's share of the ball and forced the rearguard of Simon Walton, Mike Bell, Matt Fenlon and Tom Walton into overtime from the outset.
The visitors were restricted to long-range efforts and it was seventeen minutes before keeper Jim Hardisty was forced into his first save of the match. The match boiled over the competitive edge for a few seconds in the 35th minute which saw both sides reduced to tem players.
Wakefield were being over run but the best chances in isolated attacks fell to Sam Murphy who shot straight at the keeper before on the stroke of half-time Chris Riley put Simon Newey clear only to be denied by the keepers out-stretched legs.
On the turn, the home side continued to look dangerous but Wakefield began to make more in-roads with the introduction of Gavin Heppinstall who marked his return from a long spell out with a knee injury. Both Adam Deakin and Sam Murphy went close before a counter-break in the 76th minute saw Darren Crowcroft get a deft touch at the near post for a 1-0 lead.
With two minutes, the home side made it 2-0 with a fine headed goal from Richard Foster only for Wakefield to reduce the arrears through Simon Newey following an astute pass from Gavin Heppinstall.
The visitors forced a tense finish but a goal with the last kick of the match from a Crowcroft tip-in sealed a hard earned victory for Walton.
The West Yorkshire Sports & Social Club man-of-the match award for Wakefield athletic "A" was shared by Mike Bell. Matt Killey and Matt Fenlon.
