Wakefield & District Sunday Football League (Division Two)
Wakefield Athletic “A”
------------------------------------------ 2
Crown----------------------------------------------------------- 3
Crown came back from behind twice to secure a semi-final berth with a thrilling victory over Wakefield Athletics' second string in this Division Two league cup tie.
The hero of the hour was midfielder Ash McGhee who hit the winning goal twenty minutes from time.
Wakefield made a good start and went ahead through Oliver Bartholomew with a headed effort at the far post before the visitors equalised in a controversial fashion - the home side were caught flat-footed when anticipating a throw-in in their favour caused some confusion and saw the visitors take the throw-in instead which ended with a crass from the right and a headed effort on target through Brian McTiernan.
The home side recovered their composure swiftly and regained their lead when a Simon Newey corner-kick was steered on target by Gavin Heppinstall.
On the turn, Wakefield created a glut of chances but saw Newey (twice), Sam Murphy and Kevin Guy (twice) denied by the outstanding goal keeping heroics of Shane Tierney.
Nick Clark grabbed the equaliser before a late strike from Ash McGhee capped a fine recovery victory for Crown despite a late flurry by the home side.
Nick Clark, Kev Wilson and Tierney excelled for the Crown while the West Yorkshire Sports & Social Clubs man-of-the match award for Wakefield Athletic "A" was shared by David Markwell, Kevin Guy and Oliver Bartholomew.
