Friendlies Week 4
Wakefield Athletic Football Club, who field three teams in the Wakefield & District Sunday Football League, concluded their pre-season preparations with success in the four team 'Round-Robin' tournament to mark their 25th Anniversary celebration this term.
In the first round, the first team registered a 2-0 victory over FC Sandal with goals from Warren Saxton and Shanoor Qayum whilst their second string suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Leeds League outfit FC Crocked Billet with Phil Bratton on target.
The second round saw a lone Robert Watson strike secure a narrow 1-0 success for the first team over their 'A' team with FC Sandal coming from behind to seal a 1-1 draw against the Leeds outfit with Matthew Lawtey on target to cancel out a David Shaples strike.
Wakefield Athletic 'A' who won the tournament last season finished up with a wooden spoon with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of FC Sandal. John Lazenby, Jamie Miller and Lee Grainger were on target for third placed FC Sandal with Simon Bentley and Gavin Heppinstall on the score sheet for WAFC second string.
The final of the 'Silver Jubilee Cup' sponsored by Frank & Val Jewson of Wrenthorpe saw Wakefield Athletic first team hold FC Crocked Billet (Leeds) to a scoreless draw to finish as outright winners. The winning trophy was presented by Chris Grace of Wakefield Sports & Social Club to the winning Wakefield Athletic skipper Danny Barnes.
** Wakefield Athletic 'B' fell to a 2-0 away defeat at the hands of Walnut Tree who are two divisions above them. Mark Hazlegrave and Michael Moss scored in each half for victorious Walnut Tree.
**In the opening games of the new season, Wakefield Athletics' three teams face Stanley United (away), Peacock (away) and Norman FC (home) respectively.
