Wakefield & District Sunday Football League (Division 1)
Poplar ...................................................... 0
Wakefield Athletic ...................................... 6
Goals from Scott Everett (2), Andrew Whelan (2), Craig Smith and Danny Barnes saw Wakefield Athletic register a resounding success over Poplar in this Division One fixture at Altofts.
The visitors started slowly, finding it difficult to clear their lines with the home striker Griffiths poising early threat. It needed a moment of brilliance from striker Scott Everett in the 10th minute to produce the opening goal with an effort into the roof of the net from the edge of the box.
Midfielder Craig Smith eclipsed Everett with a wonder strike himself with a half-volley into the top corner before the ever consistent skipper Danny Barnes made it 3-0 with a simple tap-in after some good work from Sikander Ibrahim on the right.
Poplar raised their game on the turn and saw Griffiths twice force saves from visiting custodian Anthony Whiteside. The introduction of Andrew Whelan reaped immediate rewards for Wakefield which saw him skip past his marker before driving a powerful effort on target.
Whelan soon made it 5-0 with a goal straight from a left-flank corner before Everett rounded off the home keeper for a well-taken goal.
The Express man-of-the match award for Wakefield Athletic was shared by Warren Saxon and Gavin Bell.
***Wakefield Athletic are in Cup action next Sunday with an away fixture against Shipley-based Mill Lane FC in the second round of the WRCFA Sunday Trophy competition.
Mill Lane won the Premier Division of the Walfedale League last season before joining the Bradford Sunday Alliance League this season where they remain unbeaten after nine League & Cup games.
