A goal in each-half from re-called striker Sikander Ibrahim earned Wakefield Athletic a hard-earned victory over Stanley United in this Division One League Cup fixture.
The home side made a forceful start and forced the the Stanley outfit on the back foot but it was the visitors who had the best early chance to score but for a well-timed block by Lee Everett.
Wakefield regained control and took a deserved lead when Warren Saxon and the energetic Craig Smith combined well to set-up Ibrahim who side-footed home from close range. The home side soon surged in to a 2-0 lead when Saxton's pin-point cross saw striker Scott Everett dispatch his volley home.
Stanley United fought back well and reduced the arrears minutes before half-time When Ian Pringle's corner was headed home by Chris Gray.
The visitors were in more dominant form on the turn and forced the midfield trio of Danny Barnes, Craig Smith and Mark Tallant to work overtime. Stanley drew level when Tim Bennett's effort was spilled over the line and raised the tempo of the game.
Ten minutes from time, a through ball from Saxton released Ibrahim who hit a fine volley on target for the winning goal and a berth in the Quarter-final.
Adam Fox, Del Asquith and Paul Spooner excelled for Stanley United while the Express man-of-the match for Wakefield Athletic was shared by Shazad Fiaz and Danny Barnes.
